Ketamine Assisted Therapy FAQ
-
Ketamine hydrochloride, trade name Ketalar, is legal in all 50 states and is FDA approved for general anesthesia. Most ketamine being used for mental illness is being used legally by healthcare professionals off-label.
-
Ketamine has been used as an anesthetic since the 1970s, which means we've had a long time to get to know it well. More recently, we've learned that at much lower doses than the surgical ones, it works as a therapeutic agent for a range of mental health conditions.
It has a well-established safety profile and very few unwanted side effects, and the ones that do exist are rarely encountered. The doses we use for mental health work are low enough that a lot of those potential side effects are softened or avoided altogether. And you're never doing this alone, which is part of what makes KAP feel steady. You're supported and monitored the whole way through.

We build in a handful of common-sense guardrails so you can settle in and let the medicine do its work without anything to worry about.
On treatment days, we ask that you:
Don't drive or operate any heavy machinery after your session
Arrange a safe ride home, ideally with someone you know and trust
Skip swimming, hot tubs, and bathing for the day
Avoid being the only adult caring for small children
If you're doing your session virtually, we ask a few extra things to keep you safe at home:
Have a sober, trusted sitter in the house during your session, staying just outside the treatment room
Make sure your sitter and I have each other's contact information beforehand
Keep pets out of the treatment room
Skip candles or anything else with an open flame in the room, just to be safe
-
Yes. At Earth & Sky, KAP is offered over secure video, so you can do the whole thing from home.
You'll self-administer prescriber-provided sublingual ketamine (it dissolves under your tongue) following your medical provider's instructions, and we’ll stay with you on screen for the full session, usually 2.5 to 3 hours, supporting and guiding you as things come up.
Doing it virtually means a little extra prep so your space is safe: have a sober, trusted sitter in your home just outside the treatment room, make sure your sitter and I have exchanged contact info beforehand, keep pets out of the room, and skip any open flames. The usual treatment-day guidelines still apply too: no driving, swimming, or bathing that day, and don't plan to be the only adult caring for small children.

An IV clinic focuses on the medicine and its effect on your brain. That's it. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy pairs the same kind of medicine with actual therapeutic support, so we're working on both the neurological and the psychological sides of what you're dealing with. The clinic model can relieve symptoms. KAP is built to help those changes take root and last.
-
Ketamine creates a surge in neuroplasticity, which is your brain's ability to form new connections. Think of it like freshly turned soil. The medicine opens things up, but it doesn't plant anything on its own. Preparation and Integration therapy sessions help open that window to introduce healthier patterns while your brain is especially ready to take them in.
-
Research, including studies published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, points to pairing ketamine with therapy producing stronger and longer-lasting relief than ketamine alone. On top of that, because KAP helps you build your own coping tools, most people end up needing fewer maintenance doses or boosters over time. The aim is to help you stand on your own, not to keep you coming back for the next dose.
-
That's exactly what it's built for. Ketamine alone tends to quiet acute symptoms like severe depression or suicidal thoughts by working on the underlying neurobiology. KAP goes further. We bring in trauma-informed care and approaches like EMDR to look at the experiences and patterns underneath the distress, so we're working on the source and not just the surface
-
This is one of the quietly powerful parts of KAP. The medicine softens self-criticism, anxiety, and the emotional defenses that usually keep painful memories at arm's length. That cushion makes it possible to sit with sensitive material alongside your therapist without getting flooded or thrown into panic. For a lot of people, it becomes a gentler doorway into work they've been understandably avoiding for a long time.
